Spine Care
Eight out of ten Americans will experience at least one episode of severe back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, back pain is one of the most common problems for which people seek medical treatment.
Obtaining an Accurate Diagnosis
At Centers for Bone and Joint Health, our first step in providing relief for your back and neck related disorders is to identify an accurate diagnosis. Our specialists effectively treat problems related to:
  • Overuse injuries to the spine
  • Traumatic injuries and fractures
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Degenerative spinal conditions
  • Arthritis
  • Bulging and herniated spinal disk disorders
  • Work-related spinal pain
  • Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis
Effective Treatment
Our treatment philosophy emphasizes patient education and counseling to help patients identify factors and lifestyle habits that contribute to pain.
Causes of Back and Neck Pain
Poor posture, improper body mechanics, prolonged repetitive use of incorrect bending or lifting techniques, and poor physical conditioning are the most common causes of back and neck pain. Other less frequent causes include osteoporosis and fractures. Age also increases the incidence of spinal disorders.
Prevention
Back pain caused by lifting can be prevented if you use proper lifting techniques and exercise regularly to improve your muscle strength and overall physical condition. The normal effects of aging that result in decreased bone mass, decreased strength and decreased flexibility can be slowed with a gentle exercise program.
To keep your spine healthy:
  • Exercise regularly to keep muscles that support your back strong and flexible
  • Use the correct lifting and moving techniques
  • Maintain your proper body weight. Being overweight puts a strain on your back muscles
  • Avoid smoking. Smoking increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, hip fracture, and activity-related injuries
  • Maintaining a proper posture when standing and sitting; don't slouch
