Medical Records
125 Hospital Drive, Watertown (920) 262-4210
HIM professionals play pivotal and diverse roles within the Healthcare industry. In many of these roles, HIM professionals are working much more closely with information technology professionals to achieve mutual goals. These roles include data quality management- capturing, managing and analyzing data from medical records; fraud and abuse prevention- spearheading organizational efforts to comply with laws and regulations designed to prevent fraud and abuse; information security; developing and implementing methods to ensure that patient health information is protected from unauthorized access, and other internal and external threats; and computer based patient records-applying technology to improve accessibility to patient information.

Most Healthcare professionals are familiar with the phenomenon of synergism- the cooperative action of two or more elements to increase total effectiveness. In other words, 2+2 can equal 10. But when it comes to optimizing information processes, many Healthcare organizations still look separately at health information management (HIM) and information technology (IT). As Healthcare organizations rapidly change with HIM process automation and the spread of technology, breaking down these old divisions- between those who manage the content of health information and those who manage and implement information technology- is the only way to realize the promised possibilities of synergy. Only a cooperative approach will create a successful health data management team.

Information technology managers bring skills to configure health, clinical information systems to optimize data flow and business capabilities across entire Healthcare enterprises and patient care networks. The HIM professionals bring an understanding of the clinical aspects of information, policies, and procedures-and their patient-care implications. It is HIM professionals who understand such critical issues as the uses of data, data definitions, data integrity, database content and the relationship of clinical information to coded statistical information.

This cooperative action meets the classic definition of synergy-what each side brings to the table cannot be replicated by the other, and the combination of the two skill sets goes far beyond what either could accomplish alone. As we all face the challenge of the computer-based patient record, a true partnership of equals becomes essential in creating synergy to guarantee our success.
