Each year, thousands of older Americans fall at home. Many of them are seriously injured, and some disabled. In 1996, more than 8,500 people over age 65 died because of falls.
· This year, at least one in three adults over age 65 will experience a fall.
· Of adults over age 80, almost 50% will fall at least once this next year.
· At least 34% of these falls will cause injury requiring medical treatment.
· Treatment for unsteadiness, dizziness, and balance problems can prevent these falls.
What can you do to prevent falls?
This booklet will offer suggestions to improve safety and decrease fall risk. Five important steps include:
1. Make you home safer.
2. Begin a regular exercise program.
3. Have your health care provider review your medicines.
4. Have your vision checked.
5. Consider using an assistive device to improve stability with walking.
